Cataracts

Cataracts Las VegasA cataract is a condition where the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy and no longer allows light to be focused properly. Cataracts can develop from normal aging, from an eye injury, diseases or medications known as steroids.

A cataract is usually part of the normal aging process that changes the natural, clear lens of the eye into a cloudy, opaque structure that inhibits or diminishes the passage of light to the retina. Most cataracts are related to aging and are very common in older people. Cataracts impair vision, making everyday activities such as driving and reading increasingly difficult.

Common symptoms of a cataract include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Cloudy or dulled vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Ghost images
  • Halos around lights
  • Glare
  • Frequent changes in prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses
  • Yellowing or fading effect on colors
  • Double-vision

Cataracts are progressive conditions, and can lead to severe vision loss and impairment. Advances in cataract treatments have paved the way for better techniques to remove cataracts, improve visual outcomes, and allow for faster recovery.

A cataract can form in one or both of your eyes, and surgery is usually required to remove the cataract when bothersome symptoms develop.
